High-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polyethylene high-density (PEHD) is a polyethylene thermoplastic made from petroleum. HDPE is resistant to many different solvents and has a wide variety of applications.
The rated working pressure of an HDPE pipe is determined at 20 ºC. Where the operating temperature of the fluid in the pipe exceeds 20 ºC, the pressure rating of the pipe has to be de-rated in order to maintain the designed safety factors of the pipe. HDPE pipe is not recommended in applications where the fluid temperature exceeds 50 ºC.

In sanitary sewers, hydrogen sulphide is the primary cause of corrosion. Hydrogen sulphide is converted to sulphuric acid, which attacks concrete and eventually destroys concrete manholes and pipe. HDPE has low notch sensitivity, providing a high level of resistance to the effects of external damage, especially important for pipe bursting operations and others where there is a likelihood of such damage.
HDPE pipes have excellent abrasion resistance providing long life in abrasive slurry applications. In most of these applications HDPE pipe outlasts other pipe materials such as mild steel and rubber lined steel.
